Alter Wall, Hamburg

Grandeur of space

Konzept

The tranquility and grandeur of classic urban spaces with their authentic compositions and materials meet the abstract space of contemporary art on Alter Wall. In the vicinity of historically significant buildings such as the stock exchange and town hall, the site bears ideal layers from different times. In addition to the external elements of the building, facades, materials, compositions and light structures, the immaterial spirit of the place, the genius loci, becomes perceptible through a restrained, uniform design in form and material - space is given to the room.

As a connecting urban space between Rathausmarkt and Adolphsplatz, the Alter Wall is a central part of the square area of the Stock Exchange and Rathaus, it connects the building ensemble. To emphasize this, a wide, tapered carpet of light granite slabs with white granite inlays creates a calm, monochromatic overall impression. A 23 meter long, 3 meter wide, polished bench offers the opportunity to experience the place with all its facets.

Two 8.5 meter high sculptures by the international artist Olafur Eliasson entitled “Society Mirror” tower against the background of the calm, space-giving square design. Inside, a kaleidoscope reflects the surroundings, the people and the sky from multiple perspectives. The connection between inside and outside creates spaces to pause and marvel.
