State Garden Show in Wismar GARDENS BY THE SEA

Konzept

The scene of the event in the vast, gently rolling landscape with its lofty sky beneath a steep, man-made embankment in the terrain becomes the focus of the open space concept. The landscape – full of character, with its marl hills that are typical of the coastal region directly bordering the Baltic Sea – is a green space that connects city districts and the focal point of the park design for the state garden show.

The spacious south-facing urban terrace is located atop a natural prominence and offers a wonderful view over the entire grounds and the lake below. At the same time, the terrace can also be used as a venue for events. From here, a 2.5 km long circular trail loops across the terrain, providing information at multiple stations about different biotopes and forms of vegetation and sensitising visitors to the conservation of nature and landscape.

In the middle of the park is the paradise garden, with a variety of garden themes, a water lily pool and water features. The rigorous shapes of the hedged spaces, framed by Japanese flowering cherries, accentuate the garden against the natural backdrop of the wide open, undulating meadow landscape. As the dominant landmark, a 28-metre-high viewing tower affords visitors a magnificent view of the horticultural show grounds, the Wismar Bay and the Mecklenburg hills in the distance.
