New city centre, Bremerhaven “Bürger” = Boulevard

Konzept

The Bürgermeister-Smidt street, nicknamed “Bürger”, the German word for citizen, is the most important axis in Bremerhaven city centre in terms of urban planning. It is structured spatially by the plazas Kirchenplatz and Theodor-Heuss-Platz, as well as their intersections with the east-west axes. It is the main shopping street and forms the backbone of the city.

Befitting to this important role, it has been developed into a spacious boulevard and with its complex appearance it provides significant economic stimulus.

A long walkway in the centre structures the street. It unites the various zones and is a response to the special urban features. The walkway contains fountains and water objects, sculptures, display screens and benches.
