Living and urban production in the east of Hamburg Moving upstream along the rivers Elbe and Bille

Konzept

Together with the Ministry for Urban Development and Environment and the district office Hamburg-Mitte, the mayor of Hamburg has initiated a strategy for the future named “Stromaufwärts an Elbe und Bille. Wohnen und urbane Produktion in HamburgOst” (Moving upstream along the Elbe and Bille. Living and urban production in the east of Hamburg). It is a new Schumacher-style development axis. Together with Spengler Wiescholek Architects and City Planners and Urban Catalyst studio, WES outlined the results of the analysis and the potential of HamburgOst in a supplementary comprehensive planning.

The range of objectives includes taking what already exists and conceiving and designing different themes with regard to the further development of living quarters, industrial and commercial zones, as well as open spaces and areas of water. These are shown by taking a selective focus that shows the special and unique potential for consolidation and spatial qualities, as well as the economic and urban-social relationships of Hamburg East. These areas of focus are an initial prelude and are intended to stimulate the future development process, as well as show exemplary changes and scope for further development.
