Green quality of life, user-friendly accommodation and exercise options close to the district and an improved green area with a radial connection to the outer green belt characterize Cologne‘s Westerwaldstraße with its adjacent 8-hectare areas. Ecological upgrades and improved user qualities are the focus of the urban planning measures.
The project area extends over 3 km with attractive play, sports and local recreation. The site offers diverse activity spaces such as a a bike trail, a Finnbahn as well as running and jogging paths. 200 new trees, upgraded ruderal areas, orchards typical of the cultural landscape and pastures for feeding birds and insects counteract air and noise pollution and improve biodiversity and the local microclimate. Accessible areas invite old and young to linger, the new district square in the „Kannebäckersiedlung“ promotes exchange in the residential area. At the same time, new routes make car-free mobility in the neighborhoods attractive.
Early involvement of residents, day-care centers and schools ensured transparency, needs-based orientation and a variety of ideas in the joint planning process and promoted the identity and acceptance of the open spaces. At the technical level, the interdisciplinary cooperation ensured a comprehensive technical evaluation of the measures in order to develop high-quality, sustainable solutions.
