Jacobs University Bremen

Campus life

Concept

In collaboration with the architects Böge Lindner K2, we have not only recognized and accepted the appeal of the clear, classical urban planning behind these typical barracks but have also enhanced it. We discovered an astonishing amount of existing deciduous trees and evergreen plants. By removing disturbing vegetation, view axes have been created and the urban edges of the building have become readable. By moving the earth, the open spaces were given clear raised areas, as well as new spatial definitions within the specified structures. Today, additional water-bound covered paths and further plantings of trees and shrubs support and enhance the fundamental structure.

The shifting of the earth has transformed the huge former parade ground into the FORUM, the new festivity area of the university. By cleverly supplementing the old military accommodation, new colleges have been, created with large terraces and unusual inner courtyards.

The numerous sports areas have been integrated quite naturally and inconspicuously into the park, based on the English role model, and separated from each other only by rows of Lombardy poplars.

Essentially, through the selective removal of the traffic zones, as well as further unsealing measures and the decision to do without sidewalks along the street, the site has successfully been given a cohesive, park-like character.
