Urban Square - Mümmelmannsberg Shopping Centre, Hamburg

CULTURAL DIVERSITY

概念

With more than 18,000 people from over 70 nations, Mümmelmannsberg is the biggest of Hamburg’s large housing estates and a melting pot of cultural diversity. The neighbourhood is continuously undergoing further development and is one of the areas of focused growth in the eastern part of Hamburg.

A sequence of places that logically evolve from the urban design concept, in the sense that they establish an experienceable and varied narrative structure, constitutes the focal point of the open space concept. Variously designed plazas that serve as places of communication create a high level of amenity and quality of life for the heterogeneous population. They offer residents and all users an eclectic mix of open-space options to identify with the new centre of Mümmelmannsberg in a positive atmosphere.

In addition to the design and colour concept created by Hans-Albrecht Schilling, art as a theme also distinguishes the public spaces with a sculpture garden, artworks by Fritz Fleer and various examples of façade art, like that on the Evangelical Lutheran parish church of Mümmelmannsberg. Inviting, multicoloured carpets of stone and a uniform, continuous expanse of pavement, along with play elements, seating furniture, a boules court, water features, a sculptural drinking fountain and barrier-free points of entry underscore the newly created, improved quality of life in the heart of this effervescent district.
